VECTARY Inspiration: Vivia the 3D Printed Lamp

Is VECTARY easy enough for somebody who just started with 3D modeling? This 3D printed lamp, Vivia, proves that it is! Aspiring designer Matus Danko was asked to test VECTARY for the first time.

"Vivia means living. I wanted to create an organic lampshade with a contemporary twist. Also, my creative process was very vivid. I am just starting with subdivision modeling, and I thought it would be hard, but working with VECTARY was smooth and easy."

Vivia was a weekend DIY project. With VECTARY, anyone can create such a complex design in a short time.

I did not even have to leave my browser to export the model in 3D printable format.

How to create a 3D printed lampshade

So what do you need?

  • VECTARY
  • standard 3D printer (we used Zortrax)
  • sandpaper
  • spray paint
  • glue
  • cord set with a light bulb (we used one from IKEA)

1. DESIGNING and 3D MODELING:
Thanks to the combination of standard mesh modeling with parametric plugins you can create your own shape very easily, even if you are just starting with 3D modeling.

2. 3D PRINTING
Once you are happy with the result, print the lamp on your 3D printer in separate parts which fit your printer’s printable size. To keep the parts together it helps to print the parts with little holes and pins. Or you can have it printed through our partner 3D printing service in one piece (depending on the size).

3. KEEPING EVERYTHING TOGETHER
Glue the parts together if necessary.

4. SANDING and SPRAYING
First, spray the lampshade with a filler. Choose the filler wisely and make sure it bonds properly with the particular material with which you printed your lamp shade. Then, sand until you are happy with what you see. Finally, spray at least twice with the color of your choice.

5. FINALIZING YOUR DESIGN PIECE
Install your 3D printed lampshade with an affordable cord set (e.g. from IKEA).
