AR ads: How Snapchat's Geofilters got us to the World Maker Faire

Getting a place in the spotlight

We tried a little social media experiment using Snapchat’s Geofilters to lead us right in the middle of the action at this year’s World Maker Faire in New York City.

On the 23rd and 24th of September, the Annual World Maker Faire took place at the New York Hall Of Science and we couldn’t miss the chance to take part in the “Greatest Show on Earth” as dubbed by its initiator, Maker Media. It’s an event where VECTARY just had to be, because our community (and target audience) gathered all in one place for the weekend to share their common passion for making.

We knew this was a great marketing opportunity, so we decided to do an experiment and try a low-budget AR ads solution on social media. 

Snapchat’s on-demand geofilters are a perfect way to get you right in front of your potential consumers without being located in one fixed place for the entire time of the two-day event.

The real challenge for AR ads

We knew that to make people want to use our geofilters, we needed to create a universal statement for the community of makers and to reach every possible attendee. Especially since the event was on for eight hours a day during the weekend, and the area that we had to cover was approximately 1,000,000 square feet. We had to consider even those who went in just for food, so we planned to make our brand visible everywhere you go. And all of that, for less than 100 dollars per day.

We came up with and tested two overlays using images created in our free, online 3D tool VECTARY. Any model that you create in VECTARY can then be easily exported as .PNG if you want to continue editing it in a graphic tool.

And the results?

Our Snapchat experiment was displayed to more than 2,500 people, shared over 570 times while being active for 16 hours in total. More than 20,000 people saw our branded geofilter in their feeds when sharing their favorite moments of the Maker Faire with their friends and family.
